Summer, 2016

During the summer of 2014, The Summer Hoop League was created by Mario Lamarre, the Director of Athletics at the Boys & Girls Club of Brockton (BGCB). The league is new and innovative as it combines the highest level of basketball skills/drills practice and competition with a mentoring program that is designed to prepare and guide teens, ages 15-18, through the college application process.

The mission of the League is to provide an opportunity for current collegiate athletes to give back to their community by mentoring youth. Mentors are expected to not only foster the highest level of competition imparting their basketball acumen to younger players, but also teach youth about the rigors of being a collegiate student-athlete. Mentors engage and encourage our players to pursue higher education, instilling the traits of character, commitment, and consistency encouraging them to achieve their dreams both in the classroom and on the court.

During the program, each of the league’s six teams have three collegiate player-mentors. Meeting with the players for a minimum of one hour weekly where each team meets for practice. In addition to on-court activities, the player - mentors hold an off-court session for the players where they focus on the “student” in every student-athlete and character building for mandatory half an hour. Pre and post season, surveys are distributed to the player - mentors and the younger players to assess the successes and flaws of the program to ensure the continual improvement of the league with each passing summer.
