Youth of the Year

2017 Youth of the Year

Our 2017 Youth of the Year is Mariah Brown

We are very happy to announce that Mariah Brown is the Boys & Girls Club of Brockton’s 2017 Youth of the Year! Mariah's accomplishments and leadership here at the Club was recognized by Mayor Bill Carpenter at Brockton City Hall on Tuesday, April 11th.

Mariah is a junior at Brockton High School. She is actively involved in our Keystone Club leadership program, Spoken Word Poetry program, Volleyball team, and the SMART Girls program at our Club in Brockton. She plans to attend college after graduating from high school and become a Forensic Psychologist.

Each year, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) holds a competition to award the most prestigious honor a teenager can receive as a member of their local Boys & Girls Club. The Youth of the Year is BGCA’s signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders, fully prepared to live and lead in a diverse, global and integrated world economy.

Annually, one exceptional Club member is selected to be the National Youth of the Year, serving as an ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth as well as a voice for all of our nation’s young people. Over the decades, these individuals have exemplified the Boys & Girls Club mission and are proof to the impact Clubs make in transforming and saving kids’ lives.

Becoming National Youth of the Year is an exciting and inspiring journey. Each year, thousands of Club teens participate in local, state and regional Youth of the Year events. Six teens, including five regional winners and a national military youth winner, advance to Washington, D.C., for the National Youth of the Year Gala & Celebration Dinner, where one outstanding young person is named Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national teen spokesperson. The National Youth of the Year is a role model, leader and advocate for the nearly 4 million youth served by Boys & Girls Clubs each year, and all of America’s young people.

Each local Club candidate is required to complete an application and is then judged on the quality of personal essays, recommendation letters from teachers and Boys & Girls Club staff members, transcripts, awards/recognition, and interviews. This year, the Boys & Girls Club of Brockton had exceptionally qualified candidates compete for our Club’s Youth of the Year honor. Each had to complete a challenging application packet and present their achievements to a panel of members of our Board of Directors. During their interviews they were asked questions about their academic success, future plans, commitment to a healthy lifestyle, avoidance of risky activities, and community service involvement.

As the 2017 Boys & Girls Club of Brockton Youth of the Year, Mariah will go onto the statewide competition on May 7th to compete against all of the other Youth of the Year winners from Clubs across Massachusetts and hopefully move onto the Northeast Regional Competition. We wish Mariah the very best of luck throughout the rest of the competition and look forward to celebrating her successes all year long!
